Problems:

Sticking digits: Is it one segment or the whole digit?

If it is simply one segment of one digit then more than likely the bearings may be getting worn out. Replacement is very simple; Below is a diagram of a segment exploded out to show proper assembly.

Do not try to clean with any solvents or cleaners as it may cause buildup that will prevent proper function.

4009 digit

Nonfunctional digits:

Try swapping the digit to another position on the circuit board, which is accessible by following the digit removal procedure below. You will be removing the farthest right digit (digit #8). Behind this digit is the circuit board for this particular line of scoreboard. The circuit board will look similar to one of these two boards, depending on the model of scoreboard you have.

The 3009 circuit board is set up so that the digits connectors are in a column and are in numerical order (1-8) from bottom to top. Digit #8 (the furthest right digit that you have just removed) is on the bottom and digit #1 is the furthest left, which is the very top connector of the column.

The 4009 circuit board is set up with two columns of digit connectors. Digit #1 is on the bottom of the left column, Digit #2 is on the bottom of the right column, Digit #3 is the second connector from the bottom of the left column, and so on…

If the problem seems to follow the digit, then the digit is in need of repair. If the problem seems to be constant to the circuit board, then there may be a problem with the digit driver circuitry. In either case, please contact Customer Service at (800) 287-0653 for further instructions.

Digit Removal Procedure:

Slide the clear front cover of the scoreboard to the left, exposing the furthest right digit completely.

Place one hand on the inside top of the digit pan and one on the bottom of the pan.

Gently lift the pan straight up until the bottom of the pan is free from the bottom slide groove.

Then, pull the bottom out toward you and let the digit fall from the upper slide groove.

 

Doesn’t communicate with timer

Check all fuses; two inline behind transformer cover (very far right panel, adjacent to circuit board, secured by two Phillips screws), and one on the cover; adjacent to circuit board.

Check all connections. Ensure timer setups are set to proper scoreboard speed.

Follow digit removal instructions. You are looking for two LEDs on the circuit board. One being red or green, and the other amber. The red or green LED indicates power is being supplied to the circuit board. The amber LED indicates that timer data is being properly sent to the scoreboard. If one or both of the LEDs are not lit up, please see below:

  • Check all related breakers and switches on power supply for board from electric panel.
  • If the data light is not lit, then there is an issue with the data cabling and/or timer setups that needs to be investigated.

If both LEDs are lit up, then there are two remaining possibilities. The first being that the codes (set by the row of 7 dip switches) need to be rechecked (see heading below), and the second is that there is an issue with the circuit board.

Codes come on and stay on, and/or race times don’t show

Check the LEDs as described above. If the data light is not lit, then there is an issue with the data cabling and/or timer setups that still needs to be investigated.

Check the dip switches for proper setup, especially paying attention to the one that controls “Display codes/Normal operating mode” (typically switch #2 or #6, depending on model).

If all above checks are fine, then there is a possibility that there is a problem with the circuit board. Please contact Customer Service at (800) 287-0653 for additional assistance.

 

Nothing works

Check the fuses, breakers and switches controlling the AC power leading to the board.

Check fuses and LEDs internal to the malfunctioning line of scoreboard as described in Doesn’t communicate with timer.

Internal Power Transformer

The internal power transformer resides to the right of the circuit board (very far right side of scoreboard and accessible from front only), behind a removable black sheet-metal panel (“L” shaped, held in place by two Phillips screws that attach it to the scoreboard frame).

Check AC power incoming to the malfunctioning line of scoreboard.

Check fuses, two inline behind removable panel, one on the panel, adjacent to circuit board.

Check output of transformer directly. It is a center tapped 27 VAC transformer.
